Happy Birthday Annie Oakley!
On this day in 1860, the famed female sharpshooter was born in Ohio. In this letter to President William McKinley, Oakley offers the government the services of a company of  “lady sharpshooters” who would provide their own arms and ammunition should war break out with Spain, April 5, 1898.
Ed note: Oakley, known as the “Princess of the West,” was good at shooting down the competition—and she did it in true Victorian, ladylike fashion.
